Het werd geschreven door John Martin Sommers, een gitaar / banjo / viool / mandoline speler in back-up band van Denver, op 31 december 1973 (Denver's dertigste verjaardag) toen hij reed vanuit zijn huis in Aspen, Colorado naar Los Angeles. Sommers herinnert zich dat hij op dat moment zich "vredig, gelukkig en tevreden" met zijn lot in het leven voelde, en begon onderweg wat aantekeningen te krabbelen over zijn gelukzalige toestand. Zij dienden als inspiratie voor de song.
