Tijdens een interview voor een Amerikaanse televisiezender zei James Taylor over de betekenis van "Fire and rain": "Het lied bestaat is opgebouwd uit 3 delen: Het eerste deel gaat over over Taylor's vriendin Susanne Schnerr, die stierf terwijl James in Londen aan het werk was aan zijn eerste album na ondertekening bij Apple Records. Zijn vrienden in Amerika waren bang dat het nieuws van het overlijden van Susanne James zou kunnen afleiden en zijn carriëre zou kunnen schaden. James kreeg het tragische nieuws over Susanne pas zes maanden later te horen. Het tweede deel gaat over James Taylor's strijd tegen drugsverslaving en om depressie te overwinnen. Het derde deel gaat over roem en fortuin. Het bevat een verwijzing naar James Taylor en The Flying Machine, een band waarmee hij kort heeft gewerkt net vóór zijn grote doorbraak met Paul McCartney, producer Peter Asher en Apple Records.
