"Nightshift" is een eerbetoon aan Jackie Wilson en Marvin Gaye, twee beroemde soul- en r&b-muzikanten die allebei in 1984 zijn overleden.
In dit lied verbeelden de Commodores zich dat Marvin en Jackie in een hiernamaals leven en zij noemen dit de 'nightshift' (nachtploeg). Wie in die nachtploeg werkt, loopt als het ware uit de pas met de rest van de wereld, je baadt je in duisternis terwijl je in leven bent, zolang de mensen daarbuiten je herinneren.
