(They Long to Be) Close to You van de Carpenters ligt vanaf 15 mei 1970 in de winkel. Deze song is een compositie van Burt Bacharach op tekst van Hal David.
Richard Chamberlain zet (They Long to Be) Close to You in 1963 als eerste op de plaat. De single wordt geen hit. Al snel wordt de B-kant Blue Guitar door de Amerikaanse radiostations tot A-kant gebombardeerd. Blue Guitar komt op 9 november 1963 niet hoger dan tweeënveertig in de Billboard Hot 100.
Op 20 juni 1970 komt (They Long to Be) Close to You van de Carpenters als klapper van de week op zesenvijftig binnen in de Billboard Hot 100 en stoot vijf weken later op 25 juli 1970 Mama Told Me (Not to Come) van Three Dog Night van zijn troon. De single staat vier weken bovenaan. Op de andere kant van deze single staat I Kept on Loving You, een compositie van Paul Williams en Roger Nichols.
Beide liedjes zijn afkomstig van hun album Close to You. Deze LP maakt op 19 september 1970 zijn entree in de Amerikaanse Top LPs & Tapes 200-lijst en blijft op 7 december 1970 op de tweede plaats steken achter Abraxas van Santana. In totaal staat dit album van de Carpenters zevenentachtig weken in de albumlijst van Billboard.
In de Nederlandse Top 40 komt (They Long to Be) Close to You op 3 september 1970 niet verder dan drieëndertig. De single haalt op 10 oktober 1970 de zesde plaats in de Britse hitparade.
Op 16 maart 1971 worden in het Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles voor de dertiende keer de Grammy Awards uitgereikt. Karen en Richard Carpenter krijgen drie Grammy’s. Ze worden onderscheiden voor Close to You als "Best Contemporary Song" en krijgen voor dit liedje een Grammy als "Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus". Ook in de categorie "Best New Artist" mogen ze de prijs in ontvangst nemen.
